dildo sex machine
Some time ago, while writing an article on the health effects of sex and masturbation, I came across a paper entitled ejaculation as a potential cure for nasal congestion in Mature men, which postulated a link between orgasm and nasal congestion.
The authors of that paper suggested that ejaculation orgasms might have a similar effect to nasal decongestants because, just like that drug, orgasm temporarily stimulates the sympathetic nervous system, causing vaso construction. Some believe orgasm may thus provide an alternative - and potentially healthier - treatment for nasal problems, as decongestants can have unwanted side effects that can actually worsen symptoms if used for too long.
I've always found this idea interesting because I've found something similar in my own life. After the orgasm, I did notice that breathing became easier, especially during allergy season. But my experience is an anecdote, not a statistic. So I've been wanting to see if there's any empirical research that supports this idea. Now there's one!
In this study, 36 participants (18 men and 18 women) assessed their nasal function at five different time points [2]. Before orgasm, after orgasm, 30 minutes after orgasm, 1 hour after orgasm and 3 hours after orgasm.
Participants measured nasal function in their own homes using a portable medical device. They also provided subjective measures of nasal function (in other words, could they also feel/notice the effect?). The study was conducted in 2020, presumably to get people to do something fun while in quarantine!
Everyone in the study was related to another study participant -- at least half of each couple were health care workers. Nasal measurements are taken only when both partners have reached orgasm.
Each participant also provided data on nasal function before and after the nasal decongestant spray for comparison.
Statistically, baseline trends for orgasm and nasal decongestants were very similar after one hour of use.
In other words, nasal flow was poor before orgasm and spray application, but improved immediately after orgasm and maintained for up to an hour.
Three hours later, however, nasal function had still improved with the spray, but had returned to its baseline level at orgasm.
To be sure, this is only a small study. Unfortunately, they don't have what it takes to masturbate to orgasm, so the results only apply to partner sex. While it seems likely that the effects of orgasm on the body are similar, follow-up confirmatory studies will be needed to verify this regardless of how orgasm occurs.
Of course, I can't help but wonder if there are long-term benefits for people who experience multiple orgasms, so we need another study!
That said, these findings suggest orgasm is a potential nasal decongestant that appears to be as effective as a nasal spray, lasting at least an hour. So, for those seeking temporary relief from a sore nose, orgasm may only help a little.
