Simultaneous orgasm -- Romantic or impractical?

It's a hot topic, and one that a lot of sexologists don't agree with these days.

When you and your partner orgasm at the same time, there are definitely some incredible positives. But are sexual expectations really realistic?

Besides, is it really necessary?

We've got some answers for you, plus a bunch of tips to maximize that elusive sharing orgasm.

What is simultaneous orgasm?

The name is fancy, but the concept is simple. Simultaneous orgasm is when both partners orgasm at the same time during sexual intercourse.

Usually, when people talk about simultaneous orgasms, they're referring to orgasms that occur during PIV(penis insertion into vagina) sex.

But, in reality, they can happen in all kinds of sex, with all kinds of partners! Did you climax while touching each other, or when you were 69? It's also a synchronized orgasm.

Is it the same as a mixed orgasm?

A mixed orgasm is one in which you experience a variety of stimuli at the same time.

For example, when you orgasm during vaginal penetration while stimulating the clitoris, you get mixed orgasms.

Similarly, mixed orgasms can come from simultaneous anal and G-spot stimulation, or even simultaneous prostate and penis stimulation.

But why is this such a big deal?

If almost all movies and TV shows are to be believed, then that's what sex is, right? You fumble under the covers for a while, let out a gasping groan, then grab the covers, and then you both reach an orgasm and roll off each other to your mutual satisfaction.

Right?

I'm sure I don't have to tell you, but nothing could be further from the truth.

While it's hard to estimate exactly how many couples orgasm at the same time, a global toy retailer surveyed 4,400 people to gain some insight. They found that:

  • 61% of the couples they surveyed had a goal of reaching orgasm at the same time.
  • 80% had experienced at least one ordinary orgasm.
  • 37% orgasm at least half the time during sex.

While that last number is much lower than others, it is still surprisingly high for some. There may be a reason for this: The data was collected through social media and email, so these respondents are likely to know more about sex than the general population.

Plus, they may be heavy users of sex toys!
