The psychology of Hentai pornography

What are the most popular porn search terms in 2021? According to the latest Pornhub report, it's Hang Tai. The word has been on the charts for years and seems to be on the rise. So, what is "Hengtai"?

Why are so many people attracted to it?

The Pornhub website defines "modern" as "a subgenre of Japanese manga and anime that contains overtly sexy characters and erotic images". In other words, it's cartoon porn.

While it may seem popular, it hasn't received much research attention, but I do have some data to shed light on the appeal of this porn genre.

I conducted a survey for my book, Tell Me What You Want, which surveyed 4,175 Americans about their sexual fantasies. One of the questions I ask people is if they have ever fantasized about a cartoon or anime character. I found that 27% of participants said it was something they had fantasized about, and 4% said it was something they fantasized about often.

So while quite a few people seem to fantasize about Hengtai, relatively few fantasize about it regularly. This is interesting considering hentai is such a popular search term. Fantasies that are not particularly common are disproportionately found in porn searches because they are not readily available and people have to go out of their way to find them.

By contrast, if you look at something like a threesome (almost everyone has had this fantasy at one time or another), it's not high on the search list, despite the fact that there's more threesome porn out there. Easier to find and more visible on porn sites, reducing the need to search. I'm just saying this to caution against reading too much into popular search terms, because they may not tell us as much about the popularity of a particular interest as we might think.

Ok, so who likes Hankook the most, and what's behind its sexiness?

One thing I can see from my profile is that there are considerable differences in gender and sexual orientation in Hengtai's relevant fantasies:

Twelve percent of heterosexual women have had this fantasy, and one percent said they do it regularly.
Twenty-seven percent of heterosexual men have fantasized and three percent say they fantasize often.
Twenty-six percent of lesbian and bisexual women have had such fantasies, and 4.5 percent said they often fantasize.
Thirty-nine percent of gay and bisexual men have had such fantasies before, and 8 percent said they fantasize frequently.
Forty percent of transgender and non-bisexual people have had such fantasies, and 8 percent said they fantasize frequently.
What can be seen here is that men and people of different genders are more likely to fantasize about hengtai than women. Similarly, non-heterosexuals were more likely than heterosexuals to fantasize about it.

One possible explanation for the gender and sexual orientation differences is that it could be due to a wider range of fantasy themes to which people are drawn. For example, heterosexual women, on average, had the fewest fantasies about taboo subjects, but the most fantasies about passion and romance. They were also the most likely to say they frequently appeared in their fantasies (and were often objects of desire). So more reality-based fantasies (portraying yourself and your true partner) may be more attractive to women of the opposite sex than other groups.

I also found that the fantasies of Heng Tai subject matter are related to a large number of psychological characteristics:

In general, people with active imaginations fantasize more, which makes sense -- these people fantasize more about just about everything! So, for some people, these fantasies may just be the product of mind-wandering.

Huntey's fantasies were also associated with not being outgoing (meaning not outgoing and sociable) and not being conscientious (meaning not paying attention to detail). This is pretty straightforward.

If you have less need for human contact in real life, this may carry over to your fantasy. Similarly, if you pay less attention to detail, it opens the door to a wider range of fantasies (highly conscientious people, by contrast, tend to have highly detailed fantasies that closely resemble the real world).

Huntai fantasies are also associated with more anxious attachment (greater fear of abandonment), more avoidant attachment (discomfort with intimate relationships), and more neurotic (prone to stress). For people with anxious attachment and neuroticism, imagining a fictional character may bring some comfort because it can relieve some stress and anxiety, while for people who avoid attachment, imagining a fictional partner may provide the emotional distance they are seeking.

Very fantasies are often associated with more BDSM fantasies, suggesting that these fantasies may sometimes be a vehicle for expressing BDSM interest.

In general, these fantasies were also associated with more fantasies about taboo behaviors and more fantasies about non-consensual behaviors such as involuntary voyeurism and nudity. So, for some people, Hentai may provide a way to access impossible, dangerous or illegal sexual interests in the real world.

Finally, and perhaps not surprisingly, people with persistent fantasies tend to have more fantasies about fantasy scenarios, such as having sex in outer space, with aliens or robots.

As with any sexual fantasy, different people may be attracted to Hentai for different reasons. Sometimes, it's just the result of active imagination, while other times, it may be satisfying a deeper psychological need or a creative way to express forbidden sexual interest.
