BDSM has long been considered by psychologists and psychiatrists to be an abnormal sexual interest. Classifying BDSM as sexual deviance means that it may be a fairly rare sexual behavior in the population as a whole. But is it true? How many of you have experience with BDSM?
It's hard to answer this question with confidence, because historically, national Representative gender surveys don't often ask about BDSM. Therefore, we must base most of our knowledge on the results of convenient samples. These samples are not representative of the population, so they don't tell us much about actual prevalence. However, a recent national survey in the United States offers useful insights.
The study, published in the journal plos ONE, explored Americans' interests and experiences with various BDSM practices. Here's a brief summary of their findings:
Twenty-one percent of women and 22 percent of men said they had tied up their partner or been tied up during sex.
Fourteen percent of women and 16 percent of men said they had teased or been teased by their partners during sex games.
Thirty-four percent of women and 30 percent of men said they had beaten their partner or been spanked during sex.
Three percent of women and four percent of men said they had been to a BDSM party or dungeon before.
More Americans express interest in bondage, whipping, and attending BDSM gatherings than people who have engaged in these practices in the past. In other words, BDSM interests seem to be more common than BDSM behaviors.
When you consider that a third of Americans in the National Representative Survey report have engaged in spanking, going further, spanking is just one of many different forms of BDSM, which tells us that BDSM is far from being a rare or unusual sexual interest or behavior.
If so, the survey may be underestimating the prevalence of BDSM because it did not ask about a wide range of BDSM behaviors. For example, asking about domination-submission games might get higher numbers, especially considering that dominance and submission are the most popular sexual fantasies.
More research would obviously be useful, especially with national samples, to ask about the full range of BDSM behaviour. That said, the current findings are important because they suggest that BDSM is a more common sexual interest and behavior than previously assumed.
