If you like perverted or BDSM sex, what does that say about you? Is it a serious leisure activity or an inherent aspect of your sexuality? Do different people have different answers? A recent article published in Current Reports on Sexual Health explores these issues.
On the one hand, it can be argued that wrestling /BDSM is a serious form of leisure that requires a great deal of time, a certain level of skill and expertise, and may even affect self-identity. The study found that Nuck /BDSM generally meets this criterion, which overlaps with many features of the more general concept of leisure.
In fact, as the authors of this paper report: in a study of hundreds of BDSM practitioners, "the general attributes of leisure were recognized by the vast majority of participants, Most or almost always, 90% or more of the total samples were found in the following items: positive emotions, feelings of freedom, happiness and/or enjoyment, feelings of adventure, stress relief and/or relaxation, self-expression and enjoyment of BDSM itself (intrinsic motivation).
For the same reason, other studies have suggested that Nuck /BDSM may be considered a sexual orientation. Of course, it depends on how you define the term "sexual orientation." Different scientists approach the problem in different ways. Some people think it's narrow, specifically let us look for partners according to gender; Others, however, take a broader view.
For example, some people believe that we have multiple sexual orientations, characterized by the following: "(a) intense and persistent sexual attraction; (b) The relative invariance/fluidity of sexual attraction or arousal is beyond conscious control; Early onset of childhood or adolescence; (d) The significant psychological consequences of denying, exploring, satisfying or suppressing sexual attraction and excitement; (e) Lifelong patterns of sexual attraction and arousal.
If you look at Nuck /BDSM from this perspective, it has some support as a direction. For example, the study found that the vast majority of BDSM practitioners reported that their sexual interest began at a relatively early age, especially before the age of 25. In addition, a minority of these people (7-12% in each study) reported that their interests actually developed during adolescence (between the ages of 10-12), when other traditional sexual orientations developed (e.g., gender-based attraction).
Finally, the author of this article does not support one view or the other. They argue that the intertwining of leisure and sexual orientation views /BDSM are not mutually exclusive. In other words, both may be true, which means that metamorphosis /BDSM may be a leisure activity for some people, and more of an orientation for others.
This paper is a fascinating read as it addresses the important issues raised by using torsion /BDSM as leisure or orientation. For example, what are the potential legal, therapeutic and medical implications? There is much to be gained from a better understanding of Kink /BDSM, but we clearly need to do more research on this topic to understand whether its best function is leisure, orientation, or both.
